Glenn was very gracious about playing requests and even allowed several fans to join him - performing whatever they liked. The crowd was rather small, maybe 100 people, but as Anna said, a very enthusiastic crowd.
While I was waiting just outside the door for the club to open, a cab pulled up with Glenn, Nick and Suzanne. He passed by me, kind of confoundedly, as if wondering why this door man had such an amazed and awestruck look on his face - my own brush with greatness.

Just one word for y'all..."MAIDSTONE"
Thanks to Craig who played a really stellar mandolin and finally made Glenn feel like there was some life out there in the crowd! It was a perfect moment for him to shout out "Maidstone" and while Glenn just looked out a bit confused, Craig held up the instrument and said, "I brought a mandolin" And Glenn seemed thrilled to pieces, they tuned up, and once again, Craig saved the day by having the lyrics pre-printed. It was really amazing, but since Glenn seemed to need the prompting of the lyric sheet the entire song, I can't say the mystery word been solved.
Another high point was Glenn unplugging his guitar and setting up on a stool on the floor of the club. Then...walking around singing "Daydream Believer" and "It's Not Unusual" by Tom Jones. Many of the songs were repeats from Sunday, the crowd wasn't quite as vocal this time around, although the encore applause was rather thundering.
Can't wait to hear about the New York shows... and really can't wait for Baltimore in a mere week!

The Two Mercury Lounge Shows by LUUHOW@aol.com
Squeeze at the Mercury Lounge in Manhattan
Just wanted to extend a big thank you for posting Glenn Tilbrook's solo dates. We're coming off a rather dry summer concert season in New York so I had stopped checking the Village Voice's music listings. Had I not seen your website, I would've missed Glenn's two shows at the Mercury Lounge. That, my friends, would have been a tragedy of epic proportions because Glenn was unbelievable!!! As you've probably heard (or seen for yourselves), he does a really fun show mixing Squeeze songs with covers, encouraging requests and inviting - daring?- audience members to come up and lend a hand, by either singing at the second mic or strumming along on guitar. The audience on Wednesday night embraced the concept from the word go, much to Glenn's delight. A steady parade of people jumped up on stage to sing along, some of them very well indeed. The first audience member to make a mark was a woman who sang beautiful harmony on Temptation For Love. She even helped Glenn with the words when he flubbed the third and final stanza. When the song was over, he gave her an enthusiastic hug for her efforts. But the biggest shocker of the show - both for the audience and for Glenn - was when some tall British dude in a suit walked up on stage to sing along to Take Me I'm Yours. A few seconds after he opened his mouth, the crowd gasped in recognition and Glenn's eyes became as round as saucers: The guy's baritone was a dead-ringer for Chris Difford!!! It was downright creepy, scary-perfect, as if he were channelling the spirit of the absent lyricist. His impersonation was so uncanny that once the song ended (to the deafening cheers of the crowd), Glenn immediately asked him if he knew Cool for Cats. We all roared in approval when he said yes. The guy (I think his name was Mark) did his best cockney accent as Glenn watched on in amazement, virtually beside himself with glee and wearing this look that seemed to say, ''Wait'll everyone back home hears about THIS!!!'' Wednesday's Squeeze song standouts: Slightly Drunk, When the Hangover Strikes, Some Fantastic Place, I Want You, Up the Junction, The Elephant Ride (first time I heard that one live). Great covers: From a Whisper to a Scream, Blur's End of a Century, Oasis' Wonderwall, Crowded House's Weather With You, the old rock 'n' roll classic Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee, the Kinks' Sunny Afternoon. Thursday night was also great but the audience, though larger, was more stage-shy. (The requests still came fast and furious - one wag called out for Free Bird, which elicited a laugh from the crowd and a smile from Glenn.) The only notable audience contribution was the return of the British guy Mark who, at Glenn's urging, took another brilliant stab at Cool for Cats. (In a very funny touch, he brought the song to a screeching halt when he paused before the bridge to ask, ''Isn't there supposed to be a guitar solo here?" Glenn, who had stopped playing, laughed and gave him a wicked solo.) I talked to Mark after the show and he was still giddy from the whole experience. He said he had never seen Tilbrook's solo shows in Britain and said he found it funny that he finally got to see him in New York City, of all places. He said he was shocked that people he knew in Britain were calling him because they had heard about his performance the night before!?! (Perhaps on the Internet?) Of course as good as Mark was, it only made one wish even more that Difford himself were there. Thursday's Squeeze song standouts: In Quintessence, Electric Trains, It's Over, Vanity Fair, Walk Away. Great covers: CCR's Travelin' Band (John Fogerty was in town that night), Jimi Hendrix's Angel (it was the anniversary of Hendrix's death), the Hollies' King Midas in Reverse, the Kinks' Tired of Waiting, some Gilbert & Sullivan song the title of which I forget, the Monkees' I'm a Believer and Tom Jones' It's Not Unusual (with Glenn insisting that he'd only do the song if people would get on stage and dance behind him. A bunch of audience members immediately obliged.). The highlight of both evenings was, of course, Tilbrook himself. He was in excellent voice and played the hell out of his guitar as usual. Forgive me for sounding maudlin but it was downright inspiring to watch a guy who's been playing the pop-star game for so long - and with woefully little commercial success lately - performing with the enthusiasm of a teenage kid who was on his first tour ever. It's a shame that someone of his stature has to play such tiny clubs like the Merc. But from the very selfish perspective of those of us who were there, it was an incredible opportunity to see a pop-music master in his element, up close and personal. Thanks again for the tip.
Sincerely,
Satisfied In Jersey City
P.S. Nick Harper opened for Glenn, just as he did last year when Difford and Tilbrook were on their mini acoustic tour. I really enjoyed his performance the last time around but now he plays with more confidence, plus he's got a batch of terrific new songs. He was particularly strong on Thursday night and was touched to discover that some people in the audience actually knew his material. ''Wow, requests! In New York!'' he exclaimed with genuine appreciation. Harper's a versatile pop-rock song stylist (and a fantastic guitarist) who really deserves to reach a wider audience. In an exciting piece of news, he said that he and his band had just finished recording a new album - with Tilbrook producing! Glenn even jumped on stage at the end of Nick's set to sing a cool duet that's supposed to be on the new disc. Harper said it could be out early next year.

I arrived as Nick Harper was beginning his set. Since there was only one unoccupied table left (in the back on the place), my choice was pretty obvious. After dropping my camera bag on the chair, I decided to go grab a Guinness at the bar. Returning to my seat, I noticed that someone had decided to use 'my' table to hold his beer while he stood by grabbing a smoke and watching Nick. Lucky me, the smoking man was none other than Glenn himself, who quickly removed the cup upon my return. After reassuring him that I didn't mind if he used the table, I asked him to autograph my "Singles--45's and Under" sheet music book. Not a bad start...

I thought it was outstanding. I've been a fan of Squeeze for a good 15 years, but I had only seen the band live once, and that was at a pretty big venue. I guess I had sort of taken Tillbrook's voice for granted all this time, though. I mean, I've always loved his voice, but that didn't stop me from being amazed at how he belted those songs out -- and how he seemed to get better as the show went along. What a thrill it was to get to see him in such an intimate setting! I wish I had known about his tour sooner; I would have gone to see him at the Park West, too.
A guy named Jarvis went up there, grabbed a guitar, and did "If I Fell" with him. Another guy, whose name I forget, did the Elvis part from "Whisper to a Scream." Those were both fun sidelights.
The whole house provided some nice backing vocals on "Black Coffee in Bed." I was relieved that everybody else chimed in, because there was no way I was going to be able to restrain myself from singing along at that point. (I tried to keep my singing to a minumum; I understand that the people around me showed up to hear *him*, not me. But it was a challenge.)
Nick Harper did that "amazing universe" song from Monty Python's Meaning of Life. I got a kick out of that.
I did think it was bad form when that guy in the front row followed Tillbrook into the men's room with a stack of albums and a pen, but I guess I can understand his enthusiasm.
One thing I need to have explained: Why did he not want to do "King George Street"? Somebody requested it a couple of times, and he finally acknowledged the request by laughing and saying that whomever had requested that song must have been prompted by Chris Difford, via the Internet, to do so. What was up with that? (And how do I get Chris Difford to banter with *me* on the Internet?)

The set list was fab, similar to other shows, except that Glenn actually DID play a few bars of "Freebird" using a half-full bottle of Sierra Nevada as a slide. Great fun! He didn't play my requests - "Letting Go," "Wagon Train" and "Misadventure" - but with a 1,000-plus song catalogue, ya' gotta' draw the line somewhere! Three encores, a wicked "Tempted," a snappy "Separate Beds" that wouldn't have happened without the audience, and the amazing Nick Harper opening the show and then helping out during Glenn's set. What more can you ask for? Well, it WOULD be nice to see Chris soon!

Nick Harper's set was great, too. For all the Monty Python fans out there (you know who you are), Nick sang "The Galaxy Song" from Meaning of Life, which got almost the biggest round of applause of the evening.
All in all, a terrific evening. I'm very glad I went up on stage and sang with Glenn, although I wish I'd hit all the notes. :) Next time I will be better prepared. And speaking of next time, the last thing Glenn said before he left stage was, "See you next year!" I will be in the front row again, that's for sure!
Nick opened the last show of the tour with a great set including 'The Galaxy Song' from Monty Python. That guy can really play...and sing. My wife and I saw him playing with Squeeze on the last tour and were impressed then. This time only builds more on that respect and admiration.
Glenn came on after a bit and went right into some of the Squeeze catalog to rousing applause and audience accompaniment. My apologies for not having a set list, although, some of the songs performed were:
Some Fantastic Place
Black Coffee in Bed
Vanity Fair
Pulling Mussels from a Shell
Annie Get Your Gun
Goodbye Girl
Tempted
Mud in Your Eye
Third Rail
I Won't Ever Go Drinking Again
Up the Junction
Slightly Drunk
Throughout the eve, a number of audience members participated in the interactive acoustic karaoke; all of which were quite good. The first was a woman who sang a beautiful harmony which earned a nod (and hug) from Glenn and audience approval. A chap from New York picked up Glenn's 12-string and sang the accompanying vocal part. A bloke from Newcastle, England (now living in Southern California in a band called Opium) pulled down a couple tunes with Glenn; one playing guitar and singing harmony. He was quite a favorite of the audience. Audience requests ranged from Rhinestone Cowboy to chord-intensive Squeeze tunes.
Nick came back on stage and did a few tunes with Glenn. After two encores, Glenn came out again solo to perform 'Tempted'. Early into this last song, he unplugged and went roving through the audience. After the show, I hung out and chatted with Glenn and Nick for a while which was very nice. It was also a pleasure to speak with Suzanne, their manager. She is very personable and unlike most of the music industry in America.
Chris is already writing for a new album and Glenn will be starting later this year. I, for one, can't wait. Until next year.
